My children will one day describe the torture we inflicted upon them during Carnival season by waiting nearly a month to buy a king cake. But we did it, officially: we have had our first King Cake. In our defense, we tried to buy one a day or two earlier, but Whole Foods had nothing but “Berry Chantilly” left and that just wasn’t happening.
On recommendation, we got one from Rouse’s.
The baby is thrown in the center these days, which is a shame, but there you have it. Will wanted the baby something terrible, even before we opened the box. He has been asking for King Cake since they made one in school… on Epiphany. Poor guy waited a long time.
I’m a bit of a local oddity in that I don’t have a favorite King Cake. Yet. I do know that I’m not into the fruit fillings. Last year, I stood in line for a Randazzo’s cake and it was good, but a bit too cinnamon roll sweet for me. Rouse’s was good, but I think I’d opt for cream cheese next time as the plain seemed like something was missing? We are open for suggestions on who to try next.
Will is especially ready for more.

You gotta run to Metairie/Harahan to a Tastee’s and have an Ol’ fashioned Mc Kenzie’s. It’s really just brioche with shugar on top but it’s absolutely perfect.

That’s a crime. The baby HAS to be baked in.

I remember having our first piece of King Cake last year. OMG. I thought I was going to die. It was soooo hard to wait THE WHOLE YEAR to ahve it again 🙂 Today was my middle child’s birthday and I sent up a King Cake to her, to let her know a piece of her was still in New Orleans and New Orleans will always be a piece of her 🙂 Love the look of anticipation on your son’s face!

I’ve never had New Orleans King Cake. It looks so very festive.
(I have had some French galettes des rois, with baby, but they weren’t nearly as colorful. Also, I only ever hand almond-paste ones.)

For our party we always order a Randazzo’s because of the size, but for us only we either order from Gambino’s or Haydels. Never had them with filling. In 2006 we made it from scratch because ours didn’t show up when it was supposed to and we couldn’t have the party without the king cake.

I have never had King Cake and now I am very hungry. I’m fairly certain is can’t be bought for love nor money in Atlantic Canada.

Oh Rouses king cakes are awful! All that icky sugar dumped on top. The best are from Cajun Pecan House!! Haydel’s are good too. Meche’s Doughnuts are a fav locally – bavarian cream filling. Mmmmm!!

Hahah. King Cake is one of those things no one agrees on. I actually have never liked it much (from anywhere) until this year, so I’m convinced I only like it now because I’m pregnant! Watch, next year I will be all like “eeew, too much globby sugar!”.

Frequent reader, infrequent comment-er. My all time favorite is Randazzo’s, I’ve been going to them for 10+ years and will still have them FedExed to me in Los Angeles. I am very much looking forward to getting one fresh from a Randazzo’s oven in less than 2 weeks! 🙂 Try them all (Randazzo’s, Haydels, etc.) and see which one makes your mouth water, I am sure Will won’t mind sampling for you. 🙂 Good luck!
