than the Taj"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of our favorite days in India was spent on the outskirts of Jaipur, when we went looking for block print artisans.\u00c2\u00a0 Our friend <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coldspaghetti.org\/blog\/2010\/10\/28\/at-the-bangle-shop\/\">Bela<\/a> is from Jaipur and her father, sister-in-law, and nieces still live there &#8212; and agreed to accompany us to a small town where they new block printers were at work.\u00c2\u00a0 Swati (Bela&#8217;s sister-in-law) had once worked in a school in the town, which gave some direction to our search.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, we stopped on a regular street &#8212; regular in the sense that there were camels passing by&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.coldspaghetti.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/BlockFabricPrinting25.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-6981\" over to see Kate when she emerged from the car.\u00c2\u00a0 A very ordinary experience, surrounded by ordinary sights, in this very extraordinary place.<\/p>\n<p><a there on the side of that road, in a three-walled shelter opening up to the street, were men carving extraordinary blocks.<\/p>\n<p>Did I mention that they were extraordinary?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.coldspaghetti.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/BlockFabricPrinting3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-6959\" about why we would even be interested.\u00c2\u00a0 Obviously we&#8217;re&#8230; tourists&#8230; right?\u00c2\u00a0 Except tourists don&#8217;t do this sort of thing.\u00c2\u00a0 When they saw how genuinely interested and curious we were, they opened up, showing some techniques and styles of their work.\u00c2\u00a0 And gave the kids a few blocks!\u00c2\u00a0 They laughed and smiled as the kids ooohed and aaaahed over the scorpion, elephants, and flowers these men had carved out of seemingly ordinary bits of wood.\u00c2\u00a0 Simply amazing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.coldspaghetti.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/BlockFabricPrinting1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-6957\" title=\"BlockFabricPrinting1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.coldspaghetti.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/BlockFabricPrinting1-1024x680.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"955\" height=\"650\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The detail, precision, and layering of each pattern is truly beautiful.\u00c2\u00a0 In order for the printing to involve several colors, each pattern requires several complimentary patterns to layer over the first.\u00c2\u00a0 So the sizing, grouping, and shapes must be perfect for each set.\u00c2\u00a0 They were doing it all with a few small chisels and lengths of wood to use as hammers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.coldspaghetti.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/BlockFabricPrinting2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large to go next door to see where their blocks were used&#8230; in the print building.\u00c2\u00a0 This particular print-maker was made members of a particular family, as is common in this trade.\u00c2\u00a0 The &#8220;factory&#8221; was upstairs.\u00c2\u00a0 So, after giving as many thanks as we could, we ventured next door.<\/p>\n<p>Through a narrow doorway, over a flooded area of the ground floor where a pipe had recently leaked and was being repaired, then up some stairs&#8230; and&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.coldspaghetti.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/BlockFabricPrinting6.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-6962\" title=\"BlockFabricPrinting6\" src=\"http:\/\/www.coldspaghetti.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/BlockFabricPrinting6-1024x680.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"976\" height=\"649\" methodically using ink, blocks, and leveling tools to maintain precision in each stamp of the block.\u00c2\u00a0 Fabric was draped over huge long tables, with more fabric drying from lines across the ceiling above.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.coldspaghetti.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/BlockFabricPrinting7.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter sheets) lay around the room in varying stages of production.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.coldspaghetti.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/BlockFabricPrinting8.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-6964\" title=\"BlockFabricPrinting8\" by color.\u00c2\u00a0 The pattern is applied stamp by stamp, with painstaking detail to line up each application.\u00c2\u00a0 Pieces of thin cardboard are used to make corners &#8212; they are placed across the fabric so that only certain portions of the block print, making solid corners.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.coldspaghetti.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/BlockFabricPrinting9.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-6965\" surprised by our bold entry, the artists quickly put aside their work to show us around.\u00c2\u00a0 Then they insisted we try it, too.\u00c2\u00a0 They found a piece of pre-treated fabric, made some room, and gathered a few blocks making a layered pattern.\u00c2\u00a0 Then talked us through each step, giving everyone a chance to try.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.coldspaghetti.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/BlockFabricPrinting11.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-6967\" title=\"BlockFabricPrinting11\" src=\"http:\/\/www.coldspaghetti.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/BlockFabricPrinting11-1024x680.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"975\" height=\"647\" the subsequent colors to layer on in the proper places.\u00c2\u00a0 The next blocks must be lined up with clues in the base pattern to keep everything together.<\/p>\n<p><a feel comfortable with trying &#8212; and he welcomed help.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.coldspaghetti.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/BlockFabricPrinting17.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" printing, it must be soaked in a few different wet mixes to set the color: this pink color below is actually light green when it finally dries!<\/p>\n<p><a treatment, and I spent a few minutes watching the other artists at work.\u00c2\u00a0 The focus, detail, and methods of the process were fascinating.<\/p>\n<p><a
