{"id":6683,"date":"2010-10-01T23:09:04","date_gmt":"2010-10-02T06:09:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.coldspaghetti.org\/blog\/?p=6683"},"modified":"2010-10-01T23:24:39","modified_gmt":"2010-10-02T06:24:39","slug":"non-specific","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.coldspaghetti.org\/blog\/2010\/10\/01\/non-specific\/","title":{"rendered":"Non-specific"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>How intimate, TRULY intimate, are you with the significant people in your life?<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m talking about the stuff that is REALLY INTIMATE.\u00c2\u00a0 Passing gas.\u00c2\u00a0 Using the toilet.\u00c2\u00a0 Discussing bowel movements.\u00c2\u00a0 Seeing each other in highly unflattering bathroom moments.\u00c2\u00a0 Because when you really get down to it, the list of people we&#8217;d sleep with is way longer than those who we&#8217;re willing to let see us naked on the can, bearing down on a particularly hard nugget.\u00c2\u00a0 <em>Amirite<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p>So you&#8217;ll understand then why it&#8217;s hard for me, one who is usually quite open and honest, to talk about my problems.\u00c2\u00a0 They involve nouns like &#8220;stool&#8221; and &#8220;rectum,&#8221; with illustration by adjectives like &#8220;watery&#8221; and &#8220;bloated.&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0 And then there&#8217;s the discussion of pain.\u00c2\u00a0 Everyone has abdominal pain from time to time, just like they have fevers and diarrhea.\u00c2\u00a0 So how can one explain <em>this<\/em> pain?\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 I could be dramatic: &#8220;like a rolling, roving object, splashing and thrashing in your gut, making a low, gurgling resonance that represents the inner lining of the colon opening up, starting to bleed as it quickly loses layers of protective mucosa&#8230;&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0 Or, be self-righteous in the status claim of this being high on the totem pole of pain: &#8220;like childbirth, except without the periodic rest periods between contractions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I hate myself a little for each of those descriptions above.\u00c2\u00a0 I mean, can she get over herself already&#8230;?<\/p>\n<p>On the upside, writing about colitis offers endless scatological metaphor.\u00c2\u00a0 Explosive diarrhea, like a rocket ship upon lift-off.\u00c2\u00a0 Smells that suggest the entire city&#8217;s sewer line has been directed to out-gas in your bathroom.\u00c2\u00a0 Having an illness that is hard to get behind.\u00c2\u00a0 Feeling like you&#8217;ve got shitzopherenia (oh you know, fear of shitting) or worrying how you&#8217;ll pass off untimely flatulence.<\/p>\n<p>A sense of humor may be required to appreciate that upside.<\/p>\n<p>This dude gets it, though I advise to stop the video after his song.<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"640\" height=\"385\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/t0uIa28VH_g?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"640\" height=\"385\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/t0uIa28VH_g?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p>Our first foray into this world began less than a month after  Paul and I were married.\u00c2\u00a0 It fast-tracked us into old-married-couple  territory.\u00c2\u00a0 We talk about poo more than Peace Corps volunteers.\u00c2\u00a0  Luckily, though, my problems were never firmly pinned down to anything  specific, and I have spent the last 10 years without treatment and  without incident.\u00c2\u00a0 We felt confident it would never happen again.<\/p>\n<p>Until last Saturday.\u00c2\u00a0 (Refer to text above for more insight into Saturday.)<\/p>\n<p>So that has been my week.\u00c2\u00a0 The upside is that insurance is covering this non-specific colitis (after our sizable deductible) and that today&#8217;s scope (while still waiting for news about the biopsies) showed a mild presentation that probably will not require treatment.\u00c2\u00a0 This is a very good thing.<\/p>\n<p>For comparison&#8217;s to Magpie&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.magpiemusing.com\/2009\/08\/you-want-to-know-how-much-colonoscopy.html\">costs<\/a>, today&#8217;s colonoscopy was $1000, total, including anesthesia.\u00c2\u00a0 Because this amount is lower than our deductible, we had to pay the whole amount before the procedure.\u00c2\u00a0 Another $21 was spent on the colon prep.\u00c2\u00a0 (Which, by-the-way, SUCKS way more than the old phospho- soda and magnesium citrate used just a decade ago and available for pennies over the counter.\u00c2\u00a0 Also, for those using HalfLyte, the orange flavor, if even detectable, tastes like salty feet.)\u00c2\u00a0 We paid for the procedure and meds out of our Health Care Savings Account (HSA) &#8212; which, in case you don&#8217;t have one, is an account with pre-tax dollars to pay for out-of-pocket health expenses.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s pretty much the greatest thing to medicine since the stethoscope.<\/p>\n<p>My constitution is shaken a bit by the fact that this happened, but the outcome (so far) is so great that I feel nothing but thanks.\u00c2\u00a0 Also, Paul got in some good fart jokes in the doctor&#8217;s office.<\/p>\n<p>I mean this from the bottom of my heart, that I wish you all lovely, gentle, post-coffee Zen moments each and everyday.<\/p>\n<p>So&#8230;
