{"id":6135,"date":"2010-03-25T22:20:55","date_gmt":"2010-03-26T05:20:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.coldspaghetti.org\/blog\/?p=6135"},"modified":"2010-03-25T22:20:55","modified_gmt":"2010-03-26T05:20:55","slug":"where-the-water-heater-explodes-part-one","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.coldspaghetti.org\/blog\/2010\/03\/25\/where-the-water-heater-explodes-part-one\/","title":{"rendered":"Where the water heater explodes, part one."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If I hadn&#8217;t been in the tub, Paul wouldn&#8217;t have been in our room with Kate.<\/p>\n<p>If Kate hadn&#8217;t resisted sleep for nearly 2 hours, Paul wouldn&#8217;t have left the study.<\/p>\n<p>And if Paul hadn&#8217;t left the study to be in our bedroom, he probably wouldn&#8217;t have heard the sound.<\/p>\n<p>WATER.<\/p>\n<p>From the tub, I heard him shout, &#8220;WE HAVE AN EMERGENCY&#8221; and then take off down the hall. Kate came into the bathroom as I finished up and threw on a robe.\u00c2\u00a0 It was a miracle I didn&#8217;t break my neck as I walked around the attic ladder and into the kitchen &#8212; WATER.\u00c2\u00a0 EVERYWHERE.<\/p>\n<p>It was dripping down from the lights in the center of the kitchen, dripping all over the cabinets, fridge, and pooling on the floor.\u00c2\u00a0 I ran back for towels and basins.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.coldspaghetti.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/water-5.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6140\" title=\"water 5\" src=\"http:\/\/www.coldspaghetti.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/water-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"427\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.coldspaghetti.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/water-5.jpg 427w, http:\/\/www.coldspaghetti.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/water-5-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 427px) 100vw, 427px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We still don&#8217;t know exactly what happened.\u00c2\u00a0 But the bottom line is that water leaked from one of our two water heaters.\u00c2\u00a0 They are from 1996, so they were getting old in water-heater-years.\u00c2\u00a0 Perhaps it rusted and started to leak?\u00c2\u00a0 Either way, it appears that the catch basin under the water heater overflowed &#8212; and had slowly been sending water down into the drywall over our kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>Paul bailed out the basin as a first step.\u00c2\u00a0 We investigated the problem in a variety of tests, turning off and on water in different spigots and at the main house water line.\u00c2\u00a0 The bottom line is that we don&#8217;t have water, at least for now.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.coldspaghetti.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/water-4.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6139\" title=\"water 4\" src=\"http:\/\/www.coldspaghetti.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/water-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"427\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.coldspaghetti.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/water-4.jpg 427w, http:\/\/www.coldspaghetti.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/water-4-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 427px) 100vw, 427px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Can you see the water dripping from the light and ceiling?\u00c2\u00a0 (See how the drywall seam is raised?\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s not suppose to be like that.\u00c2\u00a0 Soggy to the touch.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.coldspaghetti.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/water.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6141\" title=\"water\" src=\"http:\/\/www.coldspaghetti.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/water.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.coldspaghetti.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/water.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.coldspaghetti.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/water-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After thinking it was just the lights, Paul noticed that a dishtowel on the counter was wet&#8230; uh, oh&#8230; a few seconds later, we saw that the range was flooded as well.\u00c2\u00a0 We had to take the cabinet below apart for it to dry out.<\/p>\n<p>The water is pretty gross.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.coldspaghetti.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/water-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6136\" title=\"water 1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.coldspaghetti.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/water-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.coldspaghetti.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/water-1.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.coldspaghetti.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/water-1-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.coldspaghetti.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/water-3.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/a>As of this moment, Paul is staying up most of the night to empty the basin in the attic as it fills.\u00c2\u00a0 The water heater&#8230; the 30 gallon water heater&#8230; is slowly draining.\u00c2\u00a0 We&#8217;ve tried a few tricks but after having to do the entire clean-up a SECOND time already tonight, we admitted that we were going to just have to watch it&#8230; for awhile.<\/p>\n<p>To be continued&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If I hadn&#8217;t been in the tub, Paul wouldn&#8217;t have been in our room with Kate.
