So glad you're doing this feature. I became part of a military family in 2002 when Brother Dan joined the Georgia National Guard...after 9/11 and in part because of it. I joined the Peace Corps. Twice. My little brother joined the Army and it's been a great career choice for him. He's now a full-time employee and a Captain (we got a lot of mileage out of his years of rank as Lt. Dan, but now he's moved on to bigger and better things). Last week I was in a meeting in New York and someone made vocal, disparaging comments about the choice to join the military and I thought 'how dare you!' Like you, I lean way left, but to me that means bending enough to recognize there are people different from me out there. And I benefit from their sacrifices.

Thanks for posting this. I think in general those that don't interact with the military on a regular basis have no idea what kind of sacrifice it involves. And it's a great reminder of something we take totally for granted.
