Thanks for speaking out against inequities that are undermining the health of Americans. As you mention, once a site has been hit by disaster (and continues to be one, like post-Katrina New Orleans), standards of care can get thrown out the window. It is frightening that medical standards can differ so widely from state to state. It is unjust and, as we have seen, potentially deadly.

As an American expat (formerly living in Florida) now living in Peru, my heart goes out to the citizens of New Orleans.

wow! i'm disgusted that students would think they could do such a thing.... don't they know the history of medical research in this country (and around the world for that matter) and why it is so important to go through the proper chanels to ensure that people are being treated justly... even if you and i and everyone else who has gone through the process knows just have frustruating it can be! i hope you have it in you to speak out against these students and teach them what is appropriate!!

Hi! So Nice seeing you at RT and have been reading back over people's posts today.
About your horrible situation at a local facility - I would write an extremely polite and cool but angry letter to the medical director with cc's to the CEO and legal counsel of the facility letting them know that their staff screwed up -use names if you remember them-question the dr's training and doing things in a substandard manner - documenting your treatment, being prescribed something against CDC guidelines, etc throwing around as much medical jargon about treatment and equipment malfunction and general rudeness as you can and tell them that you expect an answer to this problem and that this won't happen to another patient/family trying to do the right thing for themselves and the community at large. IT might take a while but......you could get some satisfaction from them.....and perhaps change someone's behavior towards their patients.
As for the out of state university study....do you know anyone at your IRB? There's no reason that our citizens should not be getting the same human and privacy protections as anyone else in the country. I think this should be formally reported to the other institution's IRB.
Just my 2 cents!
Take care and good luck with everything!

What an unspeakably horrible story. This gives us all, as New Orleanians, much to ponder. What can we do to reverse this malaise? This cannot stand as is.

First, I hope everyone is feeling well.

The most makes me so very sad because, unfortunately, this is not the exception, but is the rule. All of it. I have the name of a great clinic across the lake and right in the Mississippi border if you would need it anytime. If, for no other reason, than to cut the rudeness and mentality of wait, wait wait. My nurse answered her cell phone while giving me the results of a test they did in which they thought I had blood clots in my lungs. Apparently speaking with her girlfriend about her day was more important at the moment in time than taking care of her patient.
