excellent post, holly. my grandmother described the spanish flu epidemic in her memoirs; she wrote that no one knew how to prevent it, but that some people thought alcohol could help. she then commented wryly, "my father had been self-medicating for decades." ahh, alcoholism.

i disagree somewhat with your statement "viruses are not alive," but that likely has more to do with a definition of "life" and the virion/virus state than with the accuracy of the statement.

Nice post, Holly.
Even though I get that school closing is an inconvenience for parents, I've been surprised at the comments people have left on articles about schools closing due to H1N1 here and in other cities. I think I'd be more concerned if a school didn't close if it had a case. My fear at this point is that the general public is, from what I gather, not on board with the caution of CDC and WHO. (Or at the other end of the spectrum, and blowing it way out of proportion.) If, as is suspected, this strain comes back around with a vengeance in the fall, I'm afraid the public health community will be accused of crying wolf and people will not heed our cautions. My tactic is to try to get back into infectious epi by that point, as I suspect I'll be needed.

Closing schools *feels* like panic mainly because parents who work rarely have a contingent for it. I personally am lucky enough to work from home, but for most parents, if a kid stays home then that parent has to take a sick day from work. In this economic climate, taking sick days seems like a quick trip to the unemployment office; also, many people might not have any sick days left. (The company I work for has shut down for a total of 3 weeks so far this year, meaning no one has any vacation time left.)

When you start saying things like "sending kids to school puts the community at risk," that sounds so absurd to modern ears; it sounds like a sci fi flick. And that makes people feel panicky. I hear what you're saying in this post and I believe you, but if my kid's school shut down, I'd be fighting to stay calm!

Question: If a school closes down for 3 days to disinfect, opens on the 4th day, and then on the 5th day another kid comes down with flu, does the school have to close again for three days?
